Two Police Mini-Precincts Receive Council Approval
ATLANTA
– The Atlanta City Council today approved lease agreements that will
allow for the opening of two police mini-precincts in an effort to
enhance community policing.
The agreements with Crawford Long Hospital and Greenbriar Mall would
be effective until December 31, 2013.
Crawford Long Hospital has offered the Atlanta Police Department
1,000 square feet of space at the hospital facility, located at 550
Peachtree Street NE, for the establishment of a Zone 5 Mini-Precinct
at a rental rate of $1 per year. (Legislative Reference No.
09-R-0020)
Greenbriar Mall Limited Partnership has offered the department 1,927
square feet of space at Greenbriar Mall, located at 2841 Greenbriar
Parkway SW, for the establishment of a Zone Four Mini-Precinct at a
rental rate of $1 per year. (Legislative Reference No.
09-R-0021)
“This is just what the doctor ordered,” said Councilman Kwanza Hall,
whose District 2 includes Crawford Long. “It’s a great next step for
public safety coverage in Zone 5, and especially for the southern
heart of Midtown.”
Councilman Jim Maddox said the City has been working for some time
to increase police presence around Greenbriar Mall, an area he
represents.
“This mini-precinct is one of many initiatives we are forging to put
the safety of our residents first,” Maddox said.
The two lease agreements must be reviewed by the city attorney and
approved by the Mayor.
“It is imperative for our police department to continue community
policing efforts and this is a great way to do just that,” said City
Council President Lisa M. Borders. “Having a strong police presence
adds focus and force in combating crime. Hopefully, we will be able
to continue to expand on the number of mini-precincts throughout the
city in partnership with the business sector.”
The
Greenbriar precinct will be located outside of the mall adjacent to
the front side near Macy’s Department Store.
The Crawford Long precinct will be located outside of the hospital
at the corner of Peachtree St. @ Pine St. The department will be
utilizing the old medical building.
