Creekside High, Woodland Middle and Second Chance get new

Principals

The Fulton County School System announces new principals for three schools: Kevin Robinson at Creekside High School, André Wright at Woodland Middle School and Scott O’Prey at Crossroads/Second Chance Program South.

Kevin Robinson, Creekside High School

An assistant principal at Bear Creek Middle School for the past two years, Kevin Robinson is moving to neighboring Creekside High School. His experience and rapport with middle school students will be a positive influence as they transition to Creekside.

Before Bear Creek, Robinson served six years at Westlake High School as a curriculum assistant principal. He also was an administrator and high school science teacher in South Carolina. Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from South Carolina State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of South Carolina. In addition, he has served in the United States Army National Guard.

Robinson succeeds Michael Robinson (no relation), who is now principal of the new South Fulton high school under construction.

André Wright, Woodland Middle School

André Wright moves into the principal role at Woodland Middle School, where he has served as an assistant principal. Prior to Woodland, he spent seven years as an administrator and middle school teacher in the DeKalb County School System.

Wright blends experience from the public school environment with that of the private business world. Before moving to a career in education he was president of A. Wright Transportation for seven years and a bank branch manager for three years. He attended Covenant College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After answering the call to teach, Wright attended Mercer University for certification in middle grades education. He holds master’s and specialist’s degrees in educational leadership from Lincoln Memorial University. He follows Will Bradley, who has become Banneker High School’s new principal.

Scott O’Prey, Crossroads/Second Chance South

Scott O’Prey, currently the school system’s director of Social Work Services, will lead the Crossroads/Second Chance South program. The program – one in North Fulton and the other in South Fulton – serves chronically disruptive students in grades 6-12 in a smaller, more individualized setting.

O’Prey was principal at Northwestern Middle School for five years before moving to Centennial High School, after which he became the system’s social work director. He also has been a middle school principal in Texas and a middle school and high school social studies teacher.

O’Prey earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the State University of New York, a master’s degree in educational administration from Sam Houston State University and an educational doctorate from the University of Houston. He succeeds former principal Margaret Dunn.

Assistant Principal promoted at Westlake High
Maybe the Board of Education is listening to parents complaints about removing principals this time they promoted from within. What was once old is new again as Byron White takes the reigns at Westlake High School.

Bryon White from Assistant Principal (AYP - Met, 2007 SAT Avg. - 1325, 2007 Graduation Rate 82.9% ) promoted to Principal at Westlake High School.

Byron White, new Westlake high school

White the former assistant principal at Westlake from 1999-2004 and then again from 2006 to the present, White brings to his new position a diverse leadership background spanning educational, corporate and military environments. Between assistant principalships at Westlake, which is home to Fulton’s math and science magnet program, White was principal of Tech High, a math, science and technology charter school in the City of Atlanta public school system. He led the design, development and implementation of Tech High’s curriculum and instructional model.

Prior to Fulton County, White also served as an assistant principal in Coweta County and as a mathematics teacher in Columbus, Ga. He was a process/quality engineer for Motorola, working in both Illinois and Taiwan, and served four years in the U.S. Marines Corp before moving to the educational field.White holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Florida A&M University, a master’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Georgia State University, a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Sarasota and a doctorate in instructional leadership from Argosy University.

New Principals Chosen for Three South Fulton Schools

The Fulton County Board of Education has upset the apple cart once again. It seems every time an administrator is able to get a school on track he or she is transferred or removed. This is definitely one way to keep the "achievement gap" growing for South Fulton schools. The Board has announced the following appointments:

Michael Robinson from Creekside (AYP - Did not Meet, 2007 SAT Avg.-1276, 2007 Graduation Rate - 75.9%) to the new yet to be named South Fulton high school

Michael Robinson, new South Fulton high school

Robinson is currently principal of Creekside High School in Fairburn. Prior to Creekside, he served in various roles at Tri-Cities High School in East Point and was a high school teacher in Washington D.C. Robinson received a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the University of the District of Columbia. He also holds a specialist’s degree in educational administration from Jacksonville State University and a doctorate from Argosy University.

In addition to recruiting a top-level staff, one of Robinson’s first priorities will be to form a community committee for developing a unique school identity, such as its official name, mascot and colors. The school opens in August 2009.

William Bradley from Woodland Middle School (AYP-Met) to Banneker High School (AYP - Did not meet, 2007 SAT Avg - 1248, Graduation Rate - 73.7%)

William Bradley, Banneker High School

Bradley currently serves as principal of Woodland Middle School in East Point and has also been an assistant principal and teacher at various other Fulton County schools over a 22-year period. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from The State University at West Georgia. He also has a law degree from The John Marshall Law School.

LaRoyce Sublett from Atlanta's Benjamin Carson MS (AYP- Did not meet; Needs improvement) to Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary (AYP - Met)

LaRoyce Sublett, Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School

Sublett serves as the interim principal at Benjamin S. Carson Middle School in Atlanta. He also has been a principal, assistant principal and teacher in Texas as well as an adjunct college professor in both Georgia and Texas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Houston and has a master’s degree in sociology and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Texas Southern University.

Also Patrick Burke was promoted to Chief Facilities Officer, Burke worked with many of us in redistricting the new schools built in South Fulton over the past few years.

Until his appointment as chief facilities officer, Burke served as Fulton’s director of operational planning for eight years. As the school system’s top planning officer, he developed short- and long-term enrollment projections for the system and also instituted a nationally recognized process for redistricting school attendance zones. He has worked closely with the construction management and facilities departments to develop the district’s five-year facilities management and capital programs plan.

As chief facilities officer, Burke oversees the transportation, operational planning, facilities services, construction management, safety and security, warehousing and school nutrition departments. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and legal/business administration from Ball State University, where he also earned a master’s degree in public administration, and earned a master’s degree in city planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also has completed coursework toward a doctorate in architecture and planning at Georgia Tech.

Each should be commended for their promotions and achievement. As parents we should let them know we expect more from them as leaders to stabilize their new school and create an environment for learning.

Now the board will reach into it's bags of tricks to give us new leaders for Westlake, Creekside and Woodland. Will they bring in new leadership are uproot another principal to fill these gaps leaving more voids in the education of the students of South Fulton? Better still lets see how the new superintendent handles this.
